BOSTON, USA – Former Kenyan deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has publicly declared himself as an opposition contender in the 2027 presidential election, asserting that he has the right support to defeat President William Ruto after one term.

Gachagua was speaking in Boston during a diaspora engagement and the launch of Democratic Change Party (DCP) satellite offices at the Well of Worship Hall in Massachusetts, according to Kenyan news site Citizen Digital.

“I am the frontrunner, and I think I have the best chance to be president,” he told the crowd.

Gachagua was impeached by the Kenyan Senate in October 2024 following 11 charges against him – which included corruption, insubordination, money-laundering, undermining the government, practising ethnically divisive politics, bullying public officers and threatening a judge.

The former deputy president has insisted that no consensus has been reached within opposition on a joint candidate, despite speculation of power-sharing deals and backroom negotiations.

Kenyans are heading to polls in September 2027 amid growing discontent with the current administration over police brutality against protestors.
