Local youths at Mankien Payam in Mayom County have handed over 100 guns following voluntary disarmament and the conduct of peace conferences by the state government.
The firearms mainly AK-47 rifles were collected in two-week’s time and submitted to Unity State officials by local chiefs on Thursday, 14th August.
This comes after lawmakers from the area held a conference on peaceful co-existence with neighboring areas, which resolved on peaceful disarmament.
In a statement, the governor’s office said local authorities leading the disarmament efforts have raised their concern that the rainy season is keeping the communities afar and affecting the process.
On is part, Governor Justice Riek Bim Top strongly urged the local authorities to move onto the next phase, without stating if that would be forceful disarmament. He suggests that the number of surrendered guns should exceed the reported number.
