JUBA – The Embassy of India in South Sudan has organized an event to unveil the statue of revolutionary figure Mahatma Gandhi, to commemorate the historic anniversary of the Quit India Movement, a civil disobedience movement demanding an end to British rule in India.

The statue was unveiled in a ceremony at the embassy premises after being sent to Juba by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The embassy said in a statement, the monument served as a powerful reminder of Gandhi’s enduring legacy of peace, non-violence, and freedom, resonating deeply with India’s own journey to independence and its connection with Africa.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by South Sudan Minister of Culture, Museums and National Heritage Dr. Nadia Arop Dudi, who served as the Chief Guest.

In her address, Minister Arop lauded Mahatma Gandhi’s universal principles and their continued relevance in fostering peace and understanding across nations.

Indian Ambassador to South Sudan, Anil Nautiyal also recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s life and message and his deep connection with Africa, particularly his formative years in South Africa where he first developed and practiced his philosophy of Satyagraha and non-violent resistance against injustice.

The Embassy said the statue stands as a permanent symbol of the shared values of peace, democracy, and human rights cherished by both India and South Sudan, and a tribute to the indelible mark Mahatma Gandhi left on the world.

Gandhi, a lawyer and political ethicist, employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India’s independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.
