JUBA – An extraordinary cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir adopted critical resolutions on Tuesday, reportedly aimed at advancing South Sudan’s governance and national development.
Key decisions included significant amendments to the revitalized peace agreement, undisclosed financial measures to support payment of civil servants, and steps to safeguard the health sector amidst growing challenges.
Notably, the cabinet approved amendments to the peace agreement that will delink the constitutional-making process, census, and housing data from the constitution. This decision allows the government to operate under the 2011 Transitional Constitution as amended.
Additionally, a new mechanism was established within the Ministry of Finance to ensure the timely payment of salaries and arrears to civil servants and organized forces. The move which was not elaborated in the statement by Kiir’s office, aims to address longstanding payment delays affecting public sector workers.
Minister of Cabinet Affairs Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro also noted that the council reviewed several critical memorandums from ministerial clusters.
Among the most pressing topics discussed was the need for government co-financing to support South Sudan’s health sector transformation, which is currently facing financial strain due to reduced global funding.
The cabinet emphasized the importance of national commitment to maintain and expand healthcare services across the country.
