Eritrea withdraws from IGAD as bloc voices regret

DJIBOUTI — The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has formally acknowledged the decision by Eritrea’s government to withdraw from the regional organisation, following receipt of an official Note Verbale communicated to the IGAD Secretariat.

In a statement, IGAD recalled that Eritrea had previously suspended its participation for nearly two decades before rejoining the bloc during the 14th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government in June 2023.

The organisation noted that Eritrea’s return was unanimously welcomed by all member states as a positive step toward inclusivity, solidarity, and enhanced regional cooperation.

However, IGAD expressed regret that Eritrea has not participated in meetings, programmes, or activities since rejoining. The Secretariat stated it had shown patience and goodwill throughout this period, remaining open to constructive engagement with Asmara.

The organisation further voiced disappointment that Eritrea’s decision to withdraw was made without presenting concrete proposals or engaging in discussions on institutional or policy reforms. IGAD emphasised that it has consistently been open to dialogue through established consultative mechanisms.

Despite the latest development, IGAD reaffirmed its commitment to continued outreach, encouraging Eritrea to reconsider its decision and fully rejoin the bloc.

The Secretariat urged Eritrea to remain engaged in order to advance shared regional objectives, including peace, stability, and development across the Horn of Africa.
