JUBA – President Salva Kiir has sacked the once powerful vice president Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, the governor of the Bank of South Sudan and the head of South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) in a major reshuffle on Wednesday.
Bol, a US sanctioned businessman who President Kiir groomed in a meteoric rise to power, has seen his future crumbling in a span of hours.
Kiir relieved him from his position as Vice President, removed as SPLM First Deputy Chairman, demoted from General to the rank of Private and finally dismissed him from the National Security Service.
There also allegations that he has been put under house arrest, with his security detail withdrawn.
The cause of the bitter rift between the president and his once close ally is not known, but there have been allegations of conspiracy by the later.
Kiir further removed Paul Logale from his position as SPLM Secretary General and appointed Akol Paul Kordit as the new SPLM Secretary General.
Dr. Addis Ababa Othow was sacked as Governor of the Bank of South Sudan (Central Bank) and replaced by Yeni Samuel Costa as new governor
Meanwhile, Simon Akuei was removed as Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) and replaced with William Anyuon Kuol, the former national minister of trade and industry.
