14th court session: Defense cross-examines investigator of Nasir incident

JUBA – The Special Court held its 14th session in the case against eight SPLM/A-IO officials on Friday, October 24, with the defense team extensivly cross-examining the investigator.

The defense team asked investigator Major General Basilo Thomas Wani why peace mechanisms including CTSAM-VM and R-JMEC were not involved in the Nasir incident investigation, in accordance with the peace deal.

In response, investigator Gen. Basilo says the Nasir incident is a criminal case that has nothing to do with the agreement, and the mechanisms to investigate are the police with supervision of the prosecution.

The defense further questioned the transfer of the trial from Upper Nile where the incident happened, to Juba, and why the National Security Service was the complainant and not the police.

They also asked the investigator to account for properties of the accused persons, confiscated during their arrests, including ten cars, phones and other valuables.

The investigator responded that the exhibits are registered in the accused persons statements, and by the National Security Service. The trial was then adjourned to Monday, October 26
