JUBA – Central Equatoria Governor Rabi Mujung directed a crackdown on illegal tax collectors operating in Juba and other parts of the state.
According to Leon Abe Brown, Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency, the governor ordered the operation during a meeting of the state security committee, on Wednesday.
The meeting centered on reports of multiple taxation in markets offen by different government agencies and imposters, which has fueled rising prices of goods.
The Committee resolved that only tax collectors officially deployed by recognized revenue institutions are authorized to carry out collections.
“We found that some self-deployed groups are collecting taxes in markets, which is one of the causes of inflated prices. Relevant government revenue institutions must scrutinize those deployed in markets,” Abe stressed.
On land matters, Abe said the Committee warned officials involved in land grabbing, that they will be apprehended and held accountable.
He emphasized that land should be acquired legally through State institutions mandated to allocate plots.
“Some dignitaries are involving themselves in land grabbing. This is unacceptable.”
Abe further added that the overall security situation remains relatively calm, apart from a few isolated incidents.
