Tonj South woman arrested for smuggling ammunition to armed youths

TONJ—Local security forces in Tonj South County in Warrap State have arrested what they call conflict instigators, including a woman caught smuggling munitions mixed with grain.

The region has suffered years of bloody intercommunal violence perpetrated by armed youths fighting over grazing land, cattle, and revenge.

The arrests and seizure occurred in Alol, along the Wau-Tonj road.

In a press statement, the county commissioner’s office said the burst underscores the persisting problems of trafficking in illegal weapons in the region, which frustrates efforts to address the root causes of intercommunal violence.

It said the operation underscores the conflict-arms proliferation nexus, which has plagued the greater Tonj region, usually perpetuated by retaliatory attacks and cattle raids.

“The action is a milestone in efforts to re-establish stability and peace in the region and prosecute those responsible for perpetuating the violence. The suspects are already in custody, and investigations are underway,” the statement noted.

Tonj South County Commissioner Hon. Col. John Ayitiak Warwien reportedly appreciated the security forces and condemned the practices of such crimes.

Ayitiak further underscored the state governor’s determination to bring total peace to Warrap but added that anti-peace spoilers are working tirelessly to ruin and drag people back to communal activities.

President Kiir has declared a state of emergency over Warrap and neighboring Mayom County, and the army has ordered disarmament exercises to combat recurrent inter-communal conflicts.
