JUBA – President Salva Kiir has tasked new SPLM Secretary General, Prof. Paul Logale Jumi, with revitalizing the party and strengthening its grassroots connection through the equitable provision of basic services.

Jumi officially took an oath and assumed the role of Secretary General on Tuesday before the Chairperson, President Kiir. Second Deputy Secretary General Baba Medan Konyi and SPLM chairpersons in Central Equatoria and Greater Pibor Administrative Area were also sworn in.

Kiir says he has entrusted the new Secretary General with the mandate of rejuvenating the SPLM and realigning its foundational ideals with the pressing political realities of the nation, according to his office.

The President emphasized that this renewed approach is vital for bridging the gap between the party and the grassroots.

He also declared that it is time to unite the country, calling on SPLM leaders to champion national reconciliation and peacebuilding.

“This is also a time to unite our country. The SPLM must champion national reconciliation and peace building. The revitalized peace agreement remains our roadmap, and its full implementation must be at the centre of our political work.”

Kiir urged political leaders from his party to put women and youth at the center of their leadership through empowerment policies.

“The future of the LPLM rests on our ability to engage and empower the youth and women. They must not be left on the sidelines. They must be at the heart of our leadership.”

The sixth SPLM Secretary General, Jumi takes the helm with a clear directive to strengthen party structures and foster internal democracy within the party.

He stated that South Sudan’s journey to democracy requires empowerment and participation of the citizens.

“We are at a critical juncture in our nation’s history. The road to democracy must be paved with unity, participation and empowerment of our people.”

“Together, we will face challenges and steer our nation towards peace, stability and prosperity. I am committed to spearheading the political and administrative reorganization of the party to enhance performance and effectiveness.”
