South Sudanese journalist drowns in Yambio

YAMBIO – The body of South Sudanese journalist Matia Samuel Timatio was found in the Nakpangau River in Yambio, Western Equatoria State on Thursday, 14 hours after he was reported missing.

Matia, who was working for Yambio FM at the time of his death, was spotted entering the river alone on Wednesday afternoon as witnesses perceived that he was taking shower. However, he failed to resurface, prompting concern.

The eyewitness cited by local media stated that Matia appeared to enter the water willingly, but after several minutes without a sign of him, search efforts commenced swiftly, with community members and local authorities joining forces to locate him.

The rescue operation extended into the night, and by January 8, Matia’s body was found downstream. Authorities have confirmed that the cause of death will be determined following an autopsy.

Matia is a famous radio journalist who previously worked for Anisa FM, The City Review and as a Voice of America correspondent in Western Equatoria. He briefly volunteered for Eye Radio in Juba.
