Court dismisses medical leave request for Machar, other sick co-accused officials

JUBA – The Special Court on Friday dismissed the defense application to grant medical leave for some of the accused SPLM/-IO officials on ground of misleading wording.

The defense team on Wednesday urged the court grant medical leave to some of the officials.

But the application was wrongly titled as “Republic of South Sudan against Dr. Riek Machar and seven other accused persons”, instead of “Republic of South Sudan against Puot Kang Chuol and seven other accused persons.”

Presiding judge James Alala Deng then dismissed the application and ordered that all defense applications be returned for correction and resubmissionwithin two days.

During Friday’s trial, defense lawyer Deng John informed the court that two of the accused persons were not present due to health reasons.
