JUBA – The Executive Director of INTREPID-South Sudan (ISS) is calling on the government to urgently intervene and mitigate longstanding dispute over fishing ground between Duk and Twic East communities in Jonglei State.

Bol Deng Bol added that violent confrontations have been continuing between the two communities over Biothagany fishing area, suggesting that it could escalate unless action is taken.

“We are deeply alarmed by these developments,” Deng said, in a statement.

He pointed out that ongoing discussions on social media and community events of the conflict, suspicious mobilization, including the collective inaction by authorities have “unfortunately fueled hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation, hence the unfortunate developments.”

He described the situation as deeply worrying, adding that the government is reluctant to address it.

Deng said although Jonglei Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok’s administration initially committed itself to resolving the conflict, it has now folded its arms as the communities “butcher” themselves.

The activist is strongly calling on the government to temporarily deploy neutral armed forces in Biothagany fishing area to stop possible clashes, and initiate inter-communal dialogue.

Deng also urged grassroot consultative meetings which should culminate in a peace mediation process, placing at the core the Chiefs and youth, among other groups that are directly involved.
