ARUSHA – The East African Court of Justice has set October 30th as the hearing date in the 1-billion-dollar lawsuit filed by a private airline company against the government of South Sudan.

The suit was submitted in April 2025 by Pan African Law Chambers LLP on behalf of South Sudan Supreme Airlines, which seeks the massive compensation for service allegedly provided to the army during the country’s civil war.

Advocate Wani Santino Jada claims that the government defaulted on an agreement to pay his client on installments from February this year.

“The court yesterday issued a hearing notice for the government to appear in court. You know, they undertook to pay my client early in February this year, so they were supposed to pay my clients in instalment,” Wani said.

“So they defaulted in the first instalment, second instalment, they defaulted. So we had to go back to court to protect the interests of my client. The government was supposed to file defense, but they defaulted. The deadline to file defense was on the 23rd of May.”

Wani said Juba was supposed to file a defense in May. “But they did not file defense up to now. And the advocate general is being called by the court. He doesn’t respond to calls. They send him emails. He doesn’t respond even to emails. I think they’re just escaping litigation.”

Attempts to reach the government’s advocate general for comment on the court hearing were not immediately successful.
