NIMULE – Over 400 members of unruly gangs in Nimule, Eastern Equatoria State have public committed to non-violence and laid down their weapons before the town’s municipal council, on Tuesday.
Local authorities said the mass gang capitulation a significant step toward peace and stability in Nimule Municipality.
The former gang members surrendered their weapons to Police Inspector Major David Khasmiro of the Nimule Municipality, as part of a formal ceremony.
During the event, they made a heartfelt appeal to the government for support, primarily with educational opportunities to help them reintegrate into society and the release of their colleagues who were incarcerated for past gang-related offenses.
In response, the state government has assured the former gang members of its full support, a statement said.
It added that the government plans to assist them through a new conflict mitigation project designed to address the root causes of violence and provide pathways to a more peaceful future.
