JUBA – A former official confirms that detained SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar is in high spirit and met his lawyers on Friday, September 12, to prepare for an upcoming trial.
Gai Mayen Luk, a former lawmaker in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, said Machar is also confident that he will win against his indictment.
“H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the Chairman and Commander-In-Chief of the people’s movement, has met his lawyers this afternoon,” Mayen said.
“He is not only in a clean bill of health but also in a very high spirit and confident that we will prevail.”
On September 11, President Salva Kiir suspended Machar and Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol from office to allow the legal proceedings against them.
This followed the conclusion of an investigation on the fighting in Nasir County, which indicted the SPLM-IO leader on serious charges of murder, treason and crimes against humanity.
