One killed, three injured as gunmen unleash carnage on vulnerable villagers in Mayendit South

UNITY STATE – Villagers in Dhorbowni, Mayendit South Payam in Unity State paid a heavy price for their hospitality on Wednesday, after welcoming visiting armed men from Panyijiar County, who later went on shooting rampage, killing one and injuring three others.

Mayendit’s Relief and Rehabilitation Commission reported that the attacked villages is a small strip of land that hosts people displaced by overwhelming seasonal floods there.

Initially received as visitors, the gunmen from Gakaal Payam in neighboring Panyijiar, later decided to attack the local community, killing a man and injuring two women and a boy, who are currently nursing wounds at Malkuer hospital.

The RRC Director Riek Gatkuoth said humanitarian organization Samaritan Purse promptly deployed a high speed boat to evacuate the wounded for medication.

“Several children remain unaccounted for, having fled in fear during the attack,” Gatkuoth said. He added that the armed group looted and destroyed property and livelihoods over the four hours of carnage.

They looted 24 canoes including many that were loaded with goods from Rumbek,, 27 goats, household utensils, building materials and medical supplies.
