JUBA – At least 21 people with disabilities have been equipped with essential digital literacy skills including basic computer knowledge, content creation and online safety.
The group is the latest among more than 50 young people equipped with digital skills by local NGO Koneta Initiative since the beginning of 2025.
Koneta’s IT officer Data Bettuel said they are equipping persons with disabilities with such knowledge to help them integrate in the society.
“We have seen that there is lack of inclusion for people with disabilities, especially in South Sudan. So, for that, we have come with that design of the training on digital literacy and accessibility,” he said.
“This kind of training really can help these guys a lot because they lack a lot of knowledge skills. Through this training, they can create their CVs. They can come up with digital content where they can publish online.”
“Also, they can navigate with the computer. One of the challenges, you see these people, they have their own grammar. So it really makes it difficult to communicate together. They have their different grammar. Also, some of these technical terms are not there in sign language. This is one of the challenges.”
Sign Language Interpreter Sebit Juliano Ladu, explained that the training will give the participants an opportunity to participate in different activities and decision making issues in the society.
“We are trying to make sure these people are included in the community and also in the wherever there is opportunity so we cannot exclude them so that also they can have opportunity to participate in different programmes especially in decision making.”
“We are moving toward inclusive community, a free community out of discrimination. People have got a lot of things from this tremendous training, how they can catch up with the skill of technology, how they can use internet for further studies, how also they can learn because nowadays world become digitalized.”
