JUBA – South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) said it has confiscated 235 packages of tea products during a routine inspection at Juba markets.
SSNBS said the expired tea made from Kenya was discovered by its Market Surveillance Team of the SSNBS Quality Assurance Department in an assessment of food and non-food items in the market, to safeguard consumer safety.
“During inspections conducted last week, the team intercepted an expired product identified as Kenfresh Tea. This action reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that all products entering, leaving, or sold within South Sudanese markets comply with the required standards,” it said in a statement.
SSNBS appeals to consumers in South Sudan to remain vigilant and report any counterfeit, expired, or substandard products to the Bureau to uphold quality, protect public health, and build consumer confidence in the marketplace.
The incident is the agency’s latest in many previous rejections of substandard food imports from neighboring Uganda, mainly due to reason of expiry date, poor storage, or the presence of harmful aflatoxin chemical deemed to cause cancer.
