DARFUR – Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies have announced a parallel government over their controlled territories as the three-year devastating war rages unabated.
The move was made public on Saturday by the 15-member Tasis Alliance, which appointed RSF commander Gen. Mohamed Daglo as head of the sovereign council in the new administration, opposed to the military government in Khartoum.
Rebel leader Abdelaziz al-Hilu, who commands the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) which is active in the southern Kodrofan region, was appointed as Dagalo’s deputy in the council.
The announcement came five months after the RSF and its allies signed a charter in February in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, with the aim of establishing a parallel government in RSF-controlled areas.
Analysts say the move is likely to deepen the devastating crisis in Sudan, which eruoted in April 2023 and plunged into chaos.
RSF controls much of the Darfur region and has been accused by the U.S. and UN of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
