JUBA — A digital forensic investigator on Wednesday continued presenting evidence extracted from mobile phones belonging to the first and second accused persons in the ongoing trial of eight senior SPLM/A-IO officials.

Ratlhogo Peter Calvin Rafhadi, the prosecution’s forensic expert, highlighted additional WhatsApp group conversations, text messages, and images allegedly exchanged between the second accused, Mam Pal Dhuor, and other individuals. The communications reportedly relate to the events that unfolded in Nasir in late February 2025.

Rafhadi also presented material obtained from the mobile phone of Puot Kang Chol, which included text messages, official documents, and a WhatsApp group chat used to share real-time information on South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) movements and related security incidents.

The court was shown video clips retrieved from Kang’s device, including footage of a local youth leader allegedly calling for logistical support, as well as a separate video of the late White Army leader, Tor Gile Thoan, addressing armed youths.

Presiding Judge Dr. James Alala Deng subsequently adjourned the proceedings, marking the end of the 47th court session. The trial is scheduled to resume on Friday, 6 February 2026, when the witness is expected to testify further on additional forensic reports.

Former First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and seven other SPLM/A-IO officials have been in detention since March 2025 and are facing serious charges, including crimes against the state.

Meanwhile, the security situation in South Sudan has continued to deteriorate, with the United Nations and international observers warning that the country is increasingly at risk of sliding back into full-scale war.
