JUBA – The United Kingdom Ambassador to South Sudan has announced a 26-million-dollar contribution to the Health Sector Transformation Project which supports health facilities across the country.
The funding will provide basic health and nutrition service at health facilities nationwide, through the World Bank-led Multi-Donor Trust Fund which supports the HSTP.
Ambassador David Ashley underscores that while the UK has been a longstanding supporter of the health sector in the country, it cannot replace the national contribution. He urges the transitional government to prioritize funding for health service.
“Our support is a contribution to the health of the people of South Sudan, but it cannot, we cannot replace the contribution which needs to come from the government of South Sudan,” he told journalists at Al Saba Children Hospital.
“So we have repeatedly asked the government at every level to make health a priority. There is no higher priority for a country than the health of its children. We are making our contribution today.”
“We also need the government to use the public revenues of South Sudan to support the health sector and ensure that the people, and particularly the children of South Sudan, receive the health care they need.”
