by Juba Witness

JUBA – The prosecution team re-examined lead investigator in the case against eight SPLM/A-IO officials after applying for witness protection and the appointment of a court interpreter.

Prosecution lawyer Ajo Noel Ohisa questioned the investigator Maj. Gen. Basilio Thomas Wani on events surrounding the Nasir incident, the identity of those who launched the attack and how the investigation was conducted.

The investigator also acknowledged that the 5th accused, suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, wrote a letter to Nasir and Ulang commissioners, urging them to form committees to safeguard the movement of SSPDF barges.

He however said after the committees comprising leaders of the White Army, chiefs and SPLA-IO officers, were formed on 1st March, they joined the attack on Nasir garrison two days later.

Investigator Wani identified the White Army leaders and SPLA-IO officers allegedly behind the attack as Col. Tor Gile Thoan, Kang Makana and Chuol Gatnor.

When asked whether the 2018 peace agreement provides guarantees and obligations to the special court, the investigator said the agreement does not remove obligations of national institutions.

Meanwhile, the prosecution submitted an application for witness protection and the appointment of court interpreter, quoting relevant national laws. The defense team requested time to study and respond to the application.

Presiding Judge Dr. James Alala Deng then adjourned the 19th session to Wednesday, November 12.
