Fed up with poor drainage, muddy roads, Juba residents intend to sue government

by Juba Witness

JUBA – Three residential areas in South Sudan’s capital Juba have announced plans to lodge legal action against the government over poor drainage system and muddy roads.

In their pettition, the residents of Gudele, Hai-Referendum, and Mia-Saba in the low-lying areas of Juba, habe given the government until September 10 to act before they proceed to the Supreme Court.

The petition names the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and the Juba City Council as respondents, accusing them of neglecting both major and feeder roads.

Residents argue that the “gross disrepair” has cut off access to essential services, increased transport costs, and deepened poverty.

The plaintiffs say the government’s failure violates constitutional rights, including dignity and the right to a decent standard of life.

The ultimatum comes as the roads ministry and Central Equatoria government announce a road rehabilitation campaign in the city.
