University of Bahr el Ghazal to reopen on July 28

WAU – The University of Bahr el Ghazal has announced that it will partially reopen on July 28 for selected classes, months after continuous staff strike forced its closure.

The university was shut in October 2024 after staff downed tools to force the payment of their 12-month salary arrears, medical allowances, and air ticket arrears.

Media reports indicate that the university lecturers and support staff were only paid one month’s salary arrears and continued with the strike leading to the institution’s closure to date.

In a statement on July 15, the university stated that it will reopen for only the first year and final year students, following a meeting by its top administration, which made several resolutions.

It also agreed to allocate 50 million South Sudan pounds for the renovation of hostels.

“Interviews for newly admitted students should be abandoned, except college of Education, Medicine and Public Health,” a statement said further.

South Sudan’s education sector has faced enormous challenges since the country descended into economic crisis in early 2024 after a major oil export pipeline passing through war-torn Sudan was ruptured.
